Besondere Bedeutungen

to have to

You have to wash up. The boss says so.

must not

Die verneinte Form must not heißt auf Deutsch nicht dürfen. Wenn man also sagen will: „Ich muss es nicht tun“ heißt das I do not have to do this, nicht I must not.

  • I do not have to go to school. Ich muss nicht in die Schule gehen.
  • I must not go to school. Ich darf nicht in die Schule gehen.

Sonderbedeutung must have + Partizip Perfekt

Die Verbindung must have + Partizip Perfekt sieht zwar aus wie eine Zeitform, ist es aber nicht. Sie hat insgesamt modale Bedeutung der Vermutung.

  • He must have done it. Er hat es vermutlich getan. | Er wird es wohl getan haben. | Er muss es wohl getan haben.
  • It must have been love, but it's over now.
